Another part of physical mirroring has to do with the way you dress. Once you have decided on a man to make your own, you should begin to dress like he does.

With the emphasis on subtle, wear something that will not “fight” what he wears. If he’s into denim, don’t wear a satin dress. If he’s tweedie, don’t dress mod. If possible, wear a female version of what he wears.

I remember when I first started dating my husband. He was a popular bachelor with lots of other women interested in him. Two of them were really in love with him.

He invited me to a party at his house and I knew at least one of the other women he was seeing would be there. I wanted to make the right impression.

Instead of trying to figure out what I had to wear that he’d never seen before, or what would make the other women sit up and take notice, or what I had that was the sexiest, I simply figured out what he would wear. Then I wore the same thing.

My rivals both showed up in their finest and sexiest. One wore a Halston. The other wore a very seductive gypsy outfit with her bare midriff beckoning and her cleavage calling. Instead of trying to compete, I wore a simple silk blouse, leather belt, boots and jeans, exactly what my future husband wore that night.

Naturally, he loved my outfit and I got all his attention. He thought I was most appropriately dressed—because I wore exactly what he wore. And he never knew I was mirroring him that night until he read this chapter.

Once you forget about yourself and start thinking about the man you want to fall in love with you, you will discover lots of ways to mirror him. Maybe if you’re undecided about what to order when you’re out to dinner, you could order something similar to what he gets. Perhaps if you’re wondering what brand of soap or toothpaste to buy, you could choose his. Little things add up in the mirroring department.

Because women have had to learn more subtle ways of gaining power than men have, women are more flexible. It’s always easier for a woman to switch to a man’s behavior than for him to switch to hers.

Because you are a woman, you will be able to use these techniques more easily and more gracefully than a man would. Men are certainly less likely, for example, to think of changing outfits to match someone. And the man’s reaction to mirroring with clothes? If he notices it at all, he’ll think you showed the good taste to learn from him.

One of the women I interviewed who freely admitted she could make any man fall in love with her told me, “I’m like a chameleon. I change according to what the man wants, but I’m still myself. I never lie to them, but I do notice what men want.

“For instance, if a man wants a childlike woman, I’ll let the child part of me out when we’re together.
